|FAT| Fashion Art Toronto – Day 3

The third day of |FAT| Fashion Art Toronto, themed Dress Accordingly, examined traditional modes of dress. We saw flowing white summer gowns from Queenie and 1970’s throwbacks from Dilly Daisy, but the highlight of the evening was Lesley Hampton’s spectacular line, which celebrated the strength and power of Ojibwe culture. Models wore bold black lipstick and Hampton’s metallic scale mail dresses gleamed and glittered under the spotlights. The collection was introduced by a performance of traditional Native dance and bookended by powerful video art displays calling the audience’s attention to the tragedy of missing and murdered Aboriginal women. The collection was accompanied by fusion music incorporating traditional Aboriginal voice and deep electronic bass that left us feeling moved.

Design lines Syrie and Uguu took a lighter tone, and delighted us with childlike cuteness, and we were transfixed as Maya Charbin’s modular clothing transformed before our eyes.

Outside of the runway room, installations in video, photography and textile sculpture asked the audience to consider concepts such as the changing identities we adopt during our lives (Slavica Panic: /Rol/), the transitory nature of consumer fashion (Zoran Dobric, Sandro Altamirano and Stephen Severn: Fashion and Death), and human sexuality (Amanda Pearn: Unwoven).

We are halfway through |FAT| 2016 and the show feels like it is only getting started!
